Profile Few people have ever accomplished what Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra has in his first 2 years in the big leagues. Nomar was born and raised in Whittier, California. He graduated from high school weighing only 135 lbs, but with weight training bulked up to 180, his current weight. After finishing high school, Garciaparra elected to go to Georgia Tech for college. After 3 years at Georgia Tech and being on the 1992 US Olympic team in Barcelona, Garciaparra was drafted with the #12 overal pick in the 1994 June draft by the Boston Red Sox.
Nomar played in the Red Sox farm system until the end of the 1996 season, where he was called up from Triple A Pawtucket to play for the Red Sox. Nomar hit .310 (9 for 29) with two triples, one homer, and six RBIs in his first nine games with Boston. The next season, Nomar won the AL ROY and the 1st ever rookie Home Run Derby. Garciaparra also set numerous rookie records during his tremendous rookie season. Nomar is currently single, and also enjoys playing soccer when he's not playing baseball.
