Sang Who Lee? BEN BADLER Sang Hoon Lee is not only the best pitcher to come out of Korea since Chan Ho Park, he’s also one of the biggest jokers from there. He’s already faked one arm injury to play a little joke on the media, and if he teams up with Pedro Martinez, who knows what kind of pranks they could pull off. Aside from his clowning, Lee is also one of the premier pitchers to come from Asia. Lee was a starter and a closer in Korea, and was the best at both positions. In 1995, when Lee was 24 years-old, he won the Major League Baseball equivalent of the MVP, going 20-5 with a 2.01 ERA. Mike Stanton is a setup man. Mariano Rivera is the closer. Not much debate there. In Boston, Pedro Martinez is a starter. Rheal Cormier is a setup man. Derek Lowe is a closer. Well, he's the closer only because Tom Gordon is injured. But the Sox have Rod Beck on their team, so he should close. Except Beck is not the same dominating pitcher as he was in the early 1990s, and the Yanks lit him up in October. Actually, Lowe is a true setup man, the role in which he does his best work. So Lowe should stay the setup man and let Beck close. But if you ask Lowe, he'd prefer to start above anything else. (Continued on Page 4...)
